How Viagra works
Viagra is one of the most popular treatments for male erectile dysfunction. It comes in various forms and doses, and millions of men worldwide use it to fix their impotence and put the spice back into their sex life! Viagra works by eliminating enzyme phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5) which decomposes cGMP in a mans penis. This allows cGMP to build up affecting the artery walls. The larger the amount of cGMP, the more blood flow can occur in the penis. Increased blood flow causes an erection, and so a man is able to gain and maintain an erection.
PDE5 is found primarily in the penis. It is an enzyme, this means it can speed up a chemical reaction in the body.
PDE5 accepts cGMP and in its reaction, reduces it. This makes an erection difficult. The chemical created by the pharmaceutical company that founded Viagra is called sildenafil citrate. This sildenafil citrate disables the PDE5 enzyme when it fits into it. When a man takes Viagra, sildenafil citrate affects the PDE5 enzyme. When a man then becomes sexually aroused the PDE5 is disabled and a man is able to get and maintain an erection as the cGMP does not break down and the blood is able to increase.
